Grade 8 students at Mauro Sheridan School commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott with Ms. Rosa Parks, which prompted a 381-day boycott. The boycott concluded on December 20, 1956, after the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. #NHPS
Truman School 1st graders in Mrs. Marchitto´s room are total rock stars for Math in Action! They didn't just make fruit kabobs—they are math magicians!
The rules were tricky:
Exactly 10 pieces (no more, no less! 🤯)
Must use 3+ different fruits
Every single one had to be different from their friends'!
They used awesome counting and thinking skills to build their sweet, unique snacks.

Metro welcomed 45 alumni for its second annual Alumni Day. From local communities to neighboring states and zooming in from abroad, alumni showed up to reconnect and network with current students—sharing stories, wisdom, and gratitude.

Heartfelt thanks to the people of Anthony's Ocean View for their holiday generosity to students in need. They delivered complete #Thanksgiving dinners at our Adult and Continuing Education Center and elsewhere around the city!
On November 13th, World Kindness Day, John S. Martinez Sea & Sky STEM Magnet School staff and students showed kindness through partnerships. Martinez held their 3rd annual JSM Community Day, where each grade band partnered with a local organization or group. This event is the culmination of their yearly overnight leadership retreat to Fairlee, VT at the Hulbert Outdoor Center where students take part in leadership training.
This year, every grade level maximized Community Day by engaging in curriculum-aligned partnerships that provided meaningful benefits to students and the community. Many grades will carry their partnerships with ongoing work throughout the 2025-2026 school year. The John S. Martinez Sea & Sky STEM Magnet School staff have also made a year-long partnership with Seedlings. Seedlings provides professional development around using Play and Place-Based Learning to build community connections through content.
JSM Community Day Projects for each grade level can be seen below:
Kindergarten partnered with the New Haven Fire Department to explore community helpers, meeting firefighters and creating fire safety posters and thank you cards to support their Social Studies unit.
First Grade ran a successful fundraiser for Friends of Edgewood Park, aligning with their Science unit on living and non-living things; a park representative will soon visit to detail how the donation protects local pond wildlife.
Second Grade worked with New Haven Reads, who visited to read aloud and donate free books, directly supporting Literacy goals in fluency and comprehension. In return, students created and gifted colorful bookmarks promoting kindness and reading.
Third Grade initiated an ongoing Pen Pal Project with students at Barack H. Obama University Magnet School, using the exchange of kindness letters to build writing skills and make connections.
In Fourth Grade, students developed Social Emotional Learning (SEL) empathy components by partnering with Where The Love Is rescue organization. A volunteer spoke about their work, and a rescue dog participated in math instruction, encouraging students to recognize others’ needs and practice kindness.
Fifth Grade launched a year-long water quality project tied to their science unit on human impact, completing preparatory work like creating KWL charts on Community Day. This project culminates in students testing water samples and writing a letter to the mayor, partnering directly with the City of New Haven.
Sixth Grade created "Get Out The Vote" posters for the Grand Avenue Special Services District (GASSD), connecting their civics learning to local commerce; in return, GASSD business owners will speak to the students about entrepreneurship.
7th and 8th grade students voted to support City Seed and the Boys and Girls Club at last year’s leadership retreat, after reflecting on the needs they saw in their community. JSM student council representatives have been in touch with both organizations this year to assess the needs for continued support. In addition to this, 7th and 8th grade students have worked to spread kindness on a school-wide level. From the formed helping hands committee, which works to lend a helping hand wherever needed, card making for Mary Wade during volunteered lunch time, to the mentorship offered with the Breakfast with the Bigs Program and for Community Day guidance, JSM 7th and 8th grade students have been fantastic role models of what it means to show kindness.

Metro’s New Haven History student-historians shared their People’s Atlas of New Haven with external validators from the New Haven Museum, New Haven Free Public Library, and the Yale Beinecke Library—bringing New Haven’s maps to light and its stories to life. #NHPS
NHPS Athletic Event Attendance Policy
To ensure the safety of all students, guests and athletes, the following policy shall be enacted immediately:
1. **Adult Supervision Required**: All students must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older to enter the events, ensuring responsible supervision and safety.
2. **No Masks or Facial Coverings**: Attendees are not allowed to wear masks or facial coverings, the purpose of this is to ensure we know who is at all games. Clear identification keeps everyone safe.
3. **Suspension Policy**: Students who are currently suspended from school are not permitted to attend any athletic events. additionally, if a student creates or involved in a serious disturbance any athletic event, the student will be at risk for expulsion in accordance with New Haven Public School policy. We are reinforcing behavior standards and accountability for all guests of our events.
