We are so proud of our New Haven students and those from Bridgeport, Danbury, East Hartford, Hartford, New Britain, New London, and Windham who joined together at the Capitol to advocate for equitable school funding.

We cannot keep running today's schools on a 2013 budget. There are no more efficiencies to squeeze out. Our students deserve resources that reflect today's realities.

I am grateful to my superintendent colleagues for standing with us -- and to our students for leading the way!

At Clinton Avenue School, we celebrated Read Across America Day in the best way possible! We were thrilled to welcome wonderful volunteers from United Way and guest author, Jehan Madhani, who spent time reading to our students and sharing their love of books. Thank you for helping make this day so special!

To make the celebration even more fun, students and staff dressed up as their favorite book characters — and the creativity was incredible! From classic storybook favorites to modern heroes, our hallways were filled with imagination and school spirit.

We are so proud of our readers and grateful for our community partners who help bring stories to life.

What an incredible evening at the 4th Annual Call Their Names celebration honoring pioneers in civic and political leadership!

Monica Joyner was one of 14 outstanding leaders recognized — true pioneers in education and living, breathing examples of Black history today.

Hosted by State Representative Bobby Gibson and Dr. Benjamin Foster, the evening highlighted incredible heroes from across Connecticut who share one powerful common thread:

They show up for CT.

And that matters. Showing up. Doing the work. Creating impact.

Education is the only profession where you can truly see the growth — the transformation — the difference you make in real time. Monica embodies that every single day.

When we call out the names and recognize greatness, we remind our students and our communities that they can make a difference too.

Connecticut is stronger because of leaders like you. 👏🏾✨

Dear Families,

March is Reading Month. By reading with your children, you can help them develop a lifelong love for books, which foster imagination and creativity. Reading also enhances vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills, which are essential for academic success and personal development. Please take every opportunity to read with your children.

On Friday, top 5th and 6th grade instrumental and choral music students from across Connecticut gathered at the University of Bridgeport for the Connecticut Elementary Honors Festival. The festival featured three ensembles: band, chorus, and orchestra. Each group had well over 100 student musicians.

Representing New Haven in the band were William Garzón and Joseph Redman from Mauro-Sheridan Interdistrict Magnet School, and Olivia Diaz from John C. Daniels School.

This achievement highlights not only the students’ ability to prepare challenging music independently, but also their musicianship and adaptability in collaborating with a large ensemble of peers from across the state.
