History came to life for our Beecher School MLL students at the New Haven Museum!
Our scholars took a deep dive into the founding of the Elm City, discovering:

• The Nine Squares: Learning how New Haven was the first planned city in America—a layout that still defines our downtown today!
• The Amistad Legacy: Honoring the bravery of Sengbe Pieh and the landmark trial that remains a powerful symbol of the fight for freedom.
• Innovation & Play: Seeing local inventions like the Erector Set, the legendary precursor to modern-day Legos!
• Building the Future: Celebrating William Lanson, the brilliant Black engineer and entrepreneur behind the Long Wharf extension and the Farmington Canal.
• The "Ah-Beetz" Legend: Exploring the history of New Haven pizza at the exhibit, learning about the first "pies" made by Pepe’s, and—the best part—enjoying a delicious sampling for lunch!

It was an inspiring day connecting the past to the city we call home. We are so proud of our curious learners!

For the past three years, John C. Daniels has implemented the JCD Healthy Huskies BAM (Body & Mind) Challenge. Each week the participants tracked their daily steps and completed other optional challenges focused on whole body wellness. The "stepper" with the highest total each week was the weekly winner and the stepper with the highest total for the whole challenge was declared the overall winner.

This year, the JCD team decided to "step-it-up" a notch by challenging Mauro-Sheridan to a head-to-head (or step-to-step) battle of the schools. The challenge runs for four weeks, beginning on April 21 and ending on May 17. So far the schools have found creative ways to motivate their teams such as hype videos, morning walking groups, afterschool workouts at Orange Theory, and student posters with words of motivation and support displayed throughout the school. The challenge has started and the competition is fierce!

Which school will step-it-up enough to take the top spot? Only time will tell!

Big thanks to Marcia LaFemina and David Feinberg for the warm welcome today! I had a fantastic time joining our Riverside Academy students to explore the incredible opportunities at MATCH. MATCH is doing vital work in Greater New Haven, creating pathways to self-sustainable careers in manufacturing. By providing technical training, wraparound services, and mentorship, they help individuals overcome barriers and enter the workforce with confidence. It was inspiring to see our students connect with such a transformational program. Thank you, Marcia and David, for investing in our youth and our community’s future!

Retired Judge Angela Robinson visited Mauro Sheridan School in honor of our monthly theme, Staying Focused. She spoke with classes throughout the building, emphasizing proper behavior, such as listening, following directions, showing respect, and achieving academically. She reminded students in the upper grades to stay in community, as well as school! This marked the 29th year Judge Robinson has visited the school! #NHPS

Learning shouldn't look like silent rows.

At John S. Martinez Sea & Sky STEM Magnet School, our teachers gathered for another powerful professional learning session -led by our partners at Seedlings Educators Collaborative - exploring how to weave play-based and place-based learning directly into their content curriculum.

This session took teachers out into the community with Lost in New Haven, helping us see our city as a living classroom. Because when students connect their learning to real places, real people, and real experiences - it sticks.

Our teachers aren't just lesson planners. They're designers of curiosity.

Last Friday, the Mauro Sheridan Band had the incredible opportunity to work with Perry So of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.

He spent time mentoring 8th grade trombonist Gabrielle Hilton, who will be conducting a piece in our Spring Concert (May 20). Gabrielle has been preparing through full score study, learning every part in piece, and developing her skills as a student conductor.

During the visit, Perry guided her on how to communicate with the ensemble through gesture, presence, and expression. No words

A powerful example of student leadership and musicianship in action at Mauro Sheridan.
