Earlier this year, Governor Ned Lamont established the Blue-Ribbon Commission on K-12 Education Funding and
Accountability by executive order to examine the landscape of educational funding in Connecticut and develop a
strategic plan with recommendations that address student needs and improve student outcomes. The Commission
includes representatives of boards of education, town government (including New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker), district administrators, state agencies, the
legislature, teachers, state and national education funding experts, special education directors, regional education
service centers, Alliance Districts, and parents.
In addition to perspectives and ideas from Commission members, the Commission wants to hear directly from the
community: parents and caregivers, students, school staff, and all Connecticut residents.
To share your ideas on school funding and the use of resources to support students:

A warm welcome to our new cohort of educators in the Yale Teaching Fellowship program! The program supports graduate study for current and aspiring teachers in exchange for at least three years of service in New Haven Public Schools.
Today we announced the New Haven Afterschool Initiative, which will provide high-quality programming for students in grades kindergarten through eight. The program will serve up to 2,000 students on a free or low-cost basis.
Today we welcomed families at our annual Back to School Rally at Bowen Field. The event featured entertainment, games, and giveaways of school supplies. More than 40 community organizations that provide services to New Haven families participated.

Bluejays! Here is a special update from our Jepson School "Day of Justice" event to support the incredible work at Yale Children's Hospital! We are absolutely blown away by the generosity of our community. In addition to the massive amount of donated items we received, we also collected $500 in cash donations!
We wanted to put that money to work right away and make the biggest impact possible for the kids. So, our Magnet Resource Teacher, Ms. Barbara, and her son, headed out for a very successful shopping trip at the Five Below in Old Saybrook!
Part way through the trip, the cart was overflowing with creative craft kits, games, and cozy plush stuffies. At this point, we knew we would need to turn this into a two day adventure!
So far, we have spent $390! The receipt was taller than us! We collected everything from board games and a wide range of favorite character merchandise, to sophisticated creative projects like intricate diamond painting, crystal art kits, and even interactive items like "Groovy Lamps." This collection truly offers something for everyone!
This monumental effort was only made possible through the fantastic support of the staff at the Old Saybrook Five Below! A huge, official "Thank You" for being top-notch, exceptionally friendly, helpful, and efficient in guiding us through this massive purchase.
But we're not done! With $110 still to spend, we will be returning to Five Below soon to get even more joy for the kids. Once everything is finalized, we will deliver this spectacular collection to the Yale Children's Hospital.

Although the Sound School class of 2026 practiced under our tent by the sound, ultimately the rain moved the joyous occasion indoors to neighboring Betsy Ross. Congratulations to our graduates!!
