Kindergarten scholars at Ross Woodward School had a meaningful and enriching experience as members of the New Haven Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. visited our classroom in celebration of May Week. They shared a powerful read-aloud of The Activity Book: A Child’s View from the Foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge by Mary A. McBride-Lee, allowing our young learners to connect with history through a child-centered perspective. Each student received a signed copy of the book and had the opportunity to engage with the author during a live interview, sparking curiosity and thoughtful conversation. The chapter also showed appreciation for our staff—each classroom teacher received a gift card and a rose, and our paraprofessionals were gifted books. May Week, a national program established in 1921 by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., emphasizes higher education, academic achievement, and community engagement—particularly for Black women. This experience aligned beautifully with those values and provided our students with a rich literacy and cultural connection.

History came to life for our Beecher School MLL students at the New Haven Museum!
Our scholars took a deep dive into the founding of the Elm City, discovering:

• The Nine Squares: Learning how New Haven was the first planned city in America—a layout that still defines our downtown today!
• The Amistad Legacy: Honoring the bravery of Sengbe Pieh and the landmark trial that remains a powerful symbol of the fight for freedom.
• Innovation & Play: Seeing local inventions like the Erector Set, the legendary precursor to modern-day Legos!
• Building the Future: Celebrating William Lanson, the brilliant Black engineer and entrepreneur behind the Long Wharf extension and the Farmington Canal.
• The "Ah-Beetz" Legend: Exploring the history of New Haven pizza at the exhibit, learning about the first "pies" made by Pepe’s, and—the best part—enjoying a delicious sampling for lunch!

It was an inspiring day connecting the past to the city we call home. We are so proud of our curious learners!
